Physical/digital product design to fuel an industry

For their updated range of petrochemical analysis devices, Grabner Instruments required both product and interface redesign. The new line's rugged precision features a restructured UI for streamlined workflows. Antimatter founder Heinrich Lentz contributed to the project while employed as lead product designer with Peschkedesign.

The challenge:
unifying a diverse product range

Grabner Instruments leads the market of portable, standardized test setups for laboratories and fast on-site tests. Improved usability and safety along with UI unification across the range should give a head start to the new "Vision" platform - and sharpen the brand profile through its physical/digital design language.

Product design:
centered on customer insights

Product design focused on USPs derived from customer insights: ruggedness in the field and a larger touchscreen. Various concepts were developed and prototyped. The selected modular casing, used for all models, offers improved usability and safety.

Design language:
rugged precision

Featuring a minimalist design language expressing sturdiness and precision, the device was developed in two color schemes following Grabner Instruments CI.

One casing for all device types

Injection-molded, fiber-reinforced parts were optimized for structural resistance in close collaboration with engineering. The system allows integration of modular hatches and vents for various types of analysis devices.

UX/UI development

Two user personas were identified: the unskilled worker, easily overwhelmed; and the expert technician - requiring full parameter control between fast, repetitive cycles.

Streamlined workflows for all users

Restructured information architecture now enables users to quickly resolve standard tasks through intuitive step-by-step processes, with deeper functionality readily accessible when needed.

Visual design:
consistency across the range

Consistent interface elements and a unifying design language were established for all devices. UI design focusing on simplicity and precision was developed in two colour schemes for light/ dark environments.
